Guitar String Selection | Learn Guitar Riffs Easier With A Thinner Gauge String

Most beginning guitar players start with a rather inexpensive instrument. They usually have a mass production clone of a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul. The most popular clones are made overseas by Gibson and Fender themselves through the Epiphone. I’ll be the first to admit that more expensive guitars are not always better but string selection is crucial if you’d like to learn guitar riffs or play lead guitar.

If you’d like to learn some of the best guitar riffs there are several different string attributes to consider. While round wound strings are easier to grip, my preference is either half wound or flat wound strings. Both half and flat cut down on excess noise significantly. Strings can be purchased in a variety of gauge sizes (thickness).  Having a fuller sound, heavy gauges (the higher the number), are thicker and more difficult to manipulate making them much more suitable for rhythm guitar. With thin strings (.008-.009 range) it’s much easier to fly through a difficult section of a song with less stress on the hand muscles. Now, thinner strings usually need to be tuned more often but it’s a small price to pay if it makes playing your favorite lead guitar riffs a lot easier.
